How to search?

To search for an image, enter your keyword, keywords or a phrase then press Enter

Searching Guidelines

  • Searches are not case sensitive
  • All searches are “and” searches by default (for example: by searching “straw donkey” we will only find images that have both “straw” and “donkey” as keywords.)
  • Sometimes it is helpful to use a “not” search to eliminate unwanted images (example: by searching “donkey” you will see images of straw donkeys as well. By searching “donkey not straw” as keywords, you can eliminate straw donkeys so that you are left with just donkeys!!

If you see too many results:
You can refine your search further by selecting the "advanced search" which allows you many additional options to limit results. Or you can use the "not" keyword (see searching guidelines above).

If you didn't get enough results:
You may have entered too much information. The search will find only those items that match all your specifications and keywords, so the more info you enter, the fewer items you will find. If you get no results:
It could be that there are no images that match your search specifications, but if you think that there should be some matches to your search request, here are some tips:

  • Get rid of some of your keywords or select keywords that are more general.
  • Check that you typed all of the keywords correctly.
  • Contact us to check if we have this subject matter still to add to the library

How to use minisites

There is another way of finding the images you need, without using the Search function. When looking at the HOME page, you can see some words, some written in different colours (blue, green, yellow, red), some others written in white. When you click on the HOUSE link, or any of the other colourful words, it will take you to a page with an image. There will be three links hidden in each image (you can find them by hovering over the image until your cursor arrow turns into a hand), apart from the HOUSE page, in which you can find several different rooms, and each of those rooms will then have the same three links as all the other image pages. The three links in each image page are:

  • Specific Searches:
These searches do the work for you! We have created loads of searches which give you images specific to that room. For example, in the main bedroom we have searches for bedroom furniture, carpets, curtains, bed linen, lingerie, pyjamas and bedroom images from magazines, adverts and newspapers. You name it we have a search for it! If we don’t, email us and we’ll add it.
  • Timeline:
The timeline focuses on a particular era relating to each room in the house. It works in the same way as the specific search but follows a chronological order. So if you need to find out what decade the Atari 2600 video-game console was released look no further than the living room entertainment timeline.
  • Object History:
At LOLC we understand that sometimes an image just isn’t enough. That is why we have created our object histories. Each room has links to our object history database and to objects which can be found there. This means not only can you buy images from LOLC but you can find the answers to such questions: What year is it from? Who created it? Who used it and why did it become a design icon? Each object’s history is carefully researched, referenced and linked to other useful internet sources.

How to make a goodie bag

So you’ve found some images you wanna keep and use in your next set of designs or in your next essay. Well that’s where our goodie bags help out. They are designed for you to store all the images you have searched for and don’t want to lose. You can create as many goodie bags as you like and name them each individually that way you can find the one you want easily.

To create a goodie bag follow these easy steps:

  • Click on the goodie bag button at the top of the main or the search result pages.
  • Type a new goodie bag name into the box next to ‘create new goodie bag’ then click on ‘create new goodie bag’.
  • Search for the image you want. Once you find it, click on the image and you be will given a larger version.
  • Click on the shopping cart icon next to the photo. The image should appear in your goodie bag.
  • From the goodie bag page you can view all the images you have stored in a goodie bag and delete items from a goodie bag by clicking ‘remove’ under the appropriate image(s).

Tip: Always create your goodie bag before searching for images. It saves you from having to go back to the goodie bag page to create one. Images will always be stored in the last created goodie bag unless you choose another goodie bag before you search.
