Welcome to LOLC's Object History Pages
Introduction
At LOLC we understand that sometimes an image just isn’t enough. That is why we have created our object history articles. Each mini site has links to our object history database and to objects which can be found there. This means not only can you buy images from LOLC but you can find answers to such questions as: What year is it from? Who created it? Who used it and Why did it become a design icon? Each object’s history is carefully researched, referenced and linked to other useful internet sources.
How to use the archive
The Object History archive is designed to work in exactly the same way as Wikipedia. Just like Wikipedia all the articles in the our object history archive are linked, or cross-referenced. So just like the LOLC image archive, you can dig deeper and deeper and find out more and more information about the objects on our site. There are also other links towards the ends of all our articles, for other articles of interest, relevant external web sites and pages, and other reference material.
Using the LOLC object history archive as a research tool
The main difference between our archive and wikipedia is that our articles are complete. Although they may be be edited and expanded over time, they are written as a finished entry using as many trusted sources as possible. Of course our aim for LOLC is to make it as community orientated as we can. To this end we are quite happy to bow down to those who may have deeper knowledge of the information on our site. For example if you see that one of our object history articles could do with a little more information please email us here and we will offer you a free image download. We are hoping that our entries will act as a jump off point for students to begin researching the images they are using in their practical and contextual work.
Stella's Take: A unique vision
Stella is the founder and curator of the 'Land of Lost Content' Museum, a shrine to everyday life in Britain throughout the twentieth century. The Collection has been amassed over almost four decades and is one of the largest and most comprehensive of its type in the Country. A large percentage of the LOLC image archive and the object's featured in our object history articles are from Stella's collection, so it seemed apt to have Stella comment on them. Stella's Take is not just about facts, it provides us with a unique view into the mind of a collector and the memories she has of the objects she's collected. Stella's Take provides the human stories behind our objects which any other site could only ever dream of having.
